Meaning

It is the month of Margazhi, on a good day filled with moonlight, and the girls of the prosperous cowherd settlement call to one another to come for the ritual bath. The one they seek is the son of Nandagopa — that fierce herdsman whose sharp spear deals harshly with any threat — Yashoda's lion cub, dark-bodied, red-eyed, his face radiant like the sun and moon together. He is Narayana himself, and he alone will grant them the drum of their vow, while the whole world looks on and praises.
