Meaning

By the light of standing lamps, on a soft rich bed raised on an ivory-legged cot, the lord lies resting against Nappinnai; they call to him, the broad flower-chested one, to at least speak. Then they turn to her, the girl with great kohl-darkened eyes: she never allows her husband to wake even for a moment, unable to bear his separation for an instant. That, they gently protest, neither befits her true nature nor is it fair to them.
